(3) R&D for Rationalizing Regulations and Reviewing Standards Concerning Hydrogen Supply Infrastructures

In the light of the full-scale introduction of FCVs and hydrogen refueling stations in 2015, research and development have been promoted for rationalizing regulations and reviewing standards in relation to building of hydrogen supply infrastructures. Review of regulations requires a substantial amount of technological studies on safety and reliability. For this purpose, JPEC has been making use of its technologies and experiences and has been working together with The Research Association of Hydrogen Supply/Utilization Technology, The High Pressure Gas Safety Institute of Japan, universities and related businesses. In order to improve the safety, reduce the costs and enhance the convenience of hydrogen refueling stations, JPEC has been conducting studies mainly in the following areas:

  • a) Technological criteria (increase of steel grade) which are applicable to hydrogen use material, and coefficients specified in hydrogen facility;
  • b) Technological criteria of composite vessels for hydrogen refueling stations and delivery;
  • c) Effective methods for inspecting hydrogen storage vessel in stations;
  • d) Parallel installation of dispensers for hydrogen and gasoline;
  • e) Definition of an explosion-proof area around a hydrogen dispenser;
  • f) Technological criteria which are applicable to hydrogen refueling stations and are compatible with the refueling method that takes advantage of the specifications of the FCV's fuel tank.
