Heavier crude oil and a growing demand for lighter petroleum prod-ucts have made it necessary to enhance both the performance and the use of Fluid Catalytic Cracking (FCC) units and Resid Fluid Catalytic Cracking (RFCC), which are vital for petroleum refining in Japan. JPEC has been working on the development of catalytic technologies for increasing the efficiency of residual oil processing with FCC units as well as the cracking severity of RFCC units. Be-cause heavier crude oil means an increase in the sulfur content of FCC gasoline, JPEC has also been engaged in the development of advanced technology for absorbing and removing sulfur, with an aim to declease Solfor content without affecting the octane number.
